CAD / CAM
So, you've heard of CAD/CAM but you're not sure what it's all about. Computer Aided Design (a digital model) / Computer Aided Manufacture (making a real-life object.) Using a design you have in mind, a digital 3 dimensional model is produced on a computer. This digital file can then be transferred to a printing machine to prduce a 3 dimensional model that you had in mind. Read on.
3D Model to Casting
We can help in the use of CAD/CAM to produce metal objects. If you can't produce a CAD (it's pretty tricky!) then we can point you in the direction of people who can help you.
Producing a CAD
Various software tools are available and if you've got lots of time on your hands, you could teach yourself to produce digital models. Otherwise a professional CAD Designer is what you want and can be recommended by us. When the design is completed you will be left with an STL file which can be transferred digitally. From this a real-life model can be produced. May we recommend Pete Croton for producing CADs: Email Pete Croton
What do you do with a CAD?
You have 3 main options.
A) You can have it printed in a wax type material and have it lost-wax cast. Perfect if you just need a one-off as a finished item or for tidying for use as a traditional metal master.
B) We can make a silicon rubber mould of your 3d Printed CAD and this can be used to produce many waxes for use in casting in any metal.
C)The digital model could be filed on a computer and printed any time you wanted a casting or indeed, multiple castings. Particularly useful for hollow designs and pieces that require tight tolerances.
Producing a CAM
The STL file is sliced into very thin digital layers and the resulting slices fed into a 3D Printer which will print all of the individual layers one at a time producing a 3D object.
Jewellery Casting Scotland at this stage don't do printing in-house (too busy being great at casting!) but we use, on a daily basis, Precision Wax to produce prints of the highest possible quality. We think they're the best. Just ask them to send the prints to us.
Find them here:
Precision WaxCasting 3D Prints
Either casting prints supplied by you or via Precision Wax we effectively treat these as ordinary waxes. We carefully attach a wax sprue at the optimal point to give a perfect casting. We then cast in whatever metal you requested.

Jewellery Casting Scotland have provided a fabulous service for us for may years now, not only a pleasure to do business with, but a fantastic team of people too – we have recommended them to many other jewellers! The best in the business by far!

Our heartfelt thanks to Scotland Casting, not only for offering such expert casting of one of my husband’s jewellery designs, but also for taking over the finishing now that my husband sadly, is no longer with us. They made the whole process easy. They are a thoroughly professional company offering a great service, which has meant that my husband’s silver earring and pendant top design can continue to go out in the world.

Thank you for the photographs of our masters. What a good idea!
You are so organised and this idea works so well for us. The folders that you sent keep everything together and we can see what the codes represent when we have forgotten. Thank you.

We want to let you know that we think that you are doing a great job for us and we love the personal service. The urgent order for an 18ct red ring that you managed to get to us in time for our customer’s Wedding Day saved us red faces – thank you.

Within my over 20 year career in the jewellery business, I have worked with many casters but Jewellery Casting Scotland, who I have ordered my castings from for over a year is the one that I appreciate most for their quality and transparent pricing. In addition to that, the exceptionally easy communication and individual approach to every job means I don’t have to look any further for jewellery casting services in the future.

Traditional in our product but modern in its execution, the benefits of speaking with Mike and Trish about your casting needs are as important as the item itself. Fantastic people, fantastic knowledge and fantastic service!!

Oh my! A great big thank you to all involved in casting my etched silver hares.
They arrived this morning and they are perfect. Delighted doesn’t even come close to describing how pleased I am.
